An even dozen!

Two more festivals have accepted “Hollywood Forever”!  We’ll have the great pleasure of screening on consecutive March weekends, taking us into spring and completing a full year of a dozen wonderful festival screenings.

First up is the Los Angeles Women’s International Film Festival, March 23-29, 2012. The opening night is at my beloved Cinefamily, so I will be there if at all possible.  (If only we could screen there!)

Next we’ll appear in the Sci-Fi Shorts Competition at the International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival, a component of the Phoenix Film Festival, March 29-April 5. I’m hoping to get there, too – and still haven’t ruled out a road trip to the Dam Short Film Festival, where we’ll screen next week…

Dam Short — damn cool!

Just got word last night that we’ve been selected to screen at the 2012 Dam Short Film Festival in Boulder City, Nevada. The film will be part of the “Sci-Fi: Past and Future Friends” program, screening at 6:30 PM on Thursday, Feb 9.

Boulder City is just east of Vegas, close to the Hoover Dam.

Nice way to kick off 2012!  Thanks, folks.

Poppy Jasper Forever

I’m happy to report that “Hollywood Forever” has just been accepted to the Poppy Jasper Film Festival in Morgan Hill, CA. The film will screen there twice during the weekend of Oct. 14-16. Named after a rare type of jasper found only in Spain and Morgan Hill, this festival is intimate celebration of independent film. The stone is semi-precious; the festival promises to be more than that.

Beside the Alamo, enchantment strange as the blue up above

Just learned that we’re a selection of SAFILM,  the 17th Annual San Antonio Film Festival. It takes place in beautiful San Antonio, of course, from June 16 – 26, 2011.

“Hollywood Forever” will screen in the Orozco Gallery of the Instituto Cultural de Mexico at HemisFair Park on June 22. The 11-day cinema event will celebrate 172 independent short and feature length films from around the globe, selected from hundreds of submissions.

I love San Antonio. In 1996, I directed my stage adaptation of Sandra Cisneros’ novel “The House on Mango Street” at Jump-Start Performance Company there. With a wonderful cast and company, we put on a wholehearted, exuberant, satisfying production. Plus I rode my bike in the Wildflower 100, got a medal from El Rey during Fiesta, and swirled my circle skirt at Conjunto Fest.

I’m honored to be included in this fine event in a city I enjoy so much. Wish I could make this screening. If you do. please let me know.

Lights, camera, Action on Film

Now it’s official, so now it can be told: Hollywood Forever will screen at the 7th annual Action on Film International Film Festival in Pasadena, CA in July. I’m very excited about this one, especially since a) I don’t have to take a plane to get there and b) I’m hoping that some cast, crew, and friends will be able to join me at the screening.

Given the contained nature of my film and the title of this festival, I wasn’t originally planning to apply. But when I met Janet Mayson  (maker of the Libby Girl films) at the Bare Bones Festival, she thought that AOF’s director Del would love my film. Judging from his effusive phone call and swift acceptance, she was right. So not only am I very happy to get such a welcoming response, I’m starting to feel that attending these festivals is connecting me with a new community of fellow filmmakers. It’s great to be able to recommend and promote each others’ projects. Looking forward to seeing Janet and other Bare Bones pals in Pasadena next month.

And AOF is already doing a great job publicizing “Hollywood Forever” and the festival. Upon acceptance, I got a prompt email from their PR ace Nina Houlihan asking me a few questions, which she crafted into this fine press release:

Romance Film with Hollywood Nostalgia will Screen at the Annual Action on Film Festival

The Action on Film Festival will screen “Hollywood Forever”, a time-travel romance that offers viewers a modern-day look into Old Hollywood

Pasadena, CA — “Hollywood Forever” is a romance film inspired by the ever-changing town of Hollywood. The film will screen at the seventh annual Action on Film Festival in Pasadena, California. The festival is expected to showcase more than 600 films in its nine day run July 22-30.

In “Hollywood Forever,” decades intertwine as an earnest young man enters a vintage clothing shop and asks a jaded goth salesgirl to help him choose a suit. The film was inspired by writer and director Amy Ludwig’s love of thrift stores, fascination with the fluidity of time, and the main character’s timeless face.

Although having much writing and directing experience, “Hollywood Forever” is Ludwig’s first film. She says, “Making this film has been my film school. It’s given me a new, concrete understanding of the dynamic relationship between script, shooting, and post-production, and how a film is remade at every stage.”

Festival creator and director Del Weston says, “‘Hollywood Forever’ is a beautiful, nostalgic film that gently tugs on your heartstrings while taking you back to a place much sweeter than any reality.” He goes on to quote Jean Baptiste Karr, saying, “the more things change, the more they stay the same..this film proves that love is timeless and while fads, history, and fashion change, love always remains the same.”

The seventh annual Action on Film Festival will take place July 22-30 in Pasadena, CA. Featuring screenings, dinners, an award show, and a renowned red carpet event, the festival and celebration will attract hundreds of talented filmmakers, celebrities, and fans alike.

For tickets and more information on the upcoming Action on Film Festival, please visit http://www.aoffest.com. For a sneak preview, tune into NBC on Saturday nights at 2:30am to watch Weston’s show, Action on Film Television.

I’m in the process of finishing up the revised poster and trailer (Now with more wreaths!) and adding Italian subtitles for Salento. (Thanks to my work colleague Patrick for recommending his diving student Fatimeh to do the translation.) That’s another art form, I find; synching the titles with the dialogue so smoothly that they’re barely noticeable, because they don’t break the rhythm. Gives me more respect for yet another unsung cinematic task. Richiede molta pazienza.

And then there were seven! (Festivals, that is.)

I just got a personal call from the director of a film festival saying he loved my film, and “We’ll definitely screen that!” He’d happened to walk into the office as his crew cued up my screener, which I sent in only yesterday (!). So he stuck around to watch it, and told me in detail that he loved the characters, the tattoos, the old magazines — the whole thing. I am still grinning. That’s the first time a festival has called to notify me. Watch for more info as it all gets official, which should be soon.

Ciao, Italia!

“Hollywood Forever” has just selected by the Salento International Film Festival, which takes place from September 2-11 in Lecce, Italy. Apparently that’s in the heel of the Italian boot, as it were. Looks beautiful.

We’ll screen in competition. Not sure if I’ll be able to go, but I don’t have to decide that yet. First I have to translate the script into Italian, or have it translated, and then create a subtitled DVD to send abroad. Fun challenge to have.

Our Italian premiere! Cue the Nino Rota

Mahalo, Big Island Film Festival!

Just returned from screening “Hollywood Forever” at the Big Island Film Festival. The warm welcome, wonderful people, and beautiful surroundings made for a memorable and enjoyable week.

Opening the festival with a call to the four directions

The Hawaiian ideas of aloha (welcome) and ohana (family) infused the festival from the start, beginning with the traditional blowing of conch shells at the opening reception:

I met Deon Hayman & J Michael Briggs that evening, whose short “The Historian Paradox” went on to win the Audience Choice Award:

Meeting and greeting

Evening events included tributes to Kristina Anapau, local Hilo girl made good in “Black Swan” and other films:

Honored Festival guests

By Sunday, I felt that I had truly extended my film ohana, in Hawaii, Los Angeles, New York, and beyond:

With Jeremy Johnson (Mute), Sandy Garfunkel (Perhaps Tomorrow), and James Windeler (Sweet Little Lies).

Thanks, Leo & Jan and all the sponsors, volunteers, and filmmakers who made BIFF 2011 such a great experience. Mahalo Nui Loa!
